I’m Sheikha Fatima Barkatulla
I'm a British Islamic scholar, children’s book author, and mother of four. By Allah’s grace, two of my children have memorised the entire Qur’an, and the other two have memorised significant portions. As their main motivator and first teacher, I supported their hifz journey despite limited resources in North West London and without having memorised the Qur’an myself.
Balancing memorisation with school, GCSEs, and A-levels was challenging. I know how difficult it can be in today’s world, where it’s easy to become too strict or lose hope. Maintaining a balanced approach that nurtures the whole child is essential. But I also know the joy of praying Taraweeh behind my children in prayer, of raising capable, confident children who love the Qur'an and contribute positively to society under its guidance and with Allah’s tawfeeq.
