I’m Sheikha Fatima Barkatulla


I’m a British Islamic scholar, children’s book author, and mother of four: two young adults and two teenagers. By Allah’s grace, two of my children have memorised the entire Qur’an, while the other two have memorised significant portions. I guided them through their hifz journey as their main motivator and manager, starting as their first teacher and then seeking additional resources and instructors for support. Living in North West London posed challenges due to the limited hifz resources available, and I navigated this journey without having memorised the entire Qur’an myself.

I have faced many challenges on our hifz journey, as my children balanced memorisation with school, GCSEs, and A-levels. I understand how difficult it can be in today’s world, where it's easy to become overly strict or lose hope. Striking a balanced, holistic approach that nurtures the whole child is key.

It’s important not to give up or become consumed by the hifz journey. My children, who also speak Arabic, can appreciate the words of Allah directly. I’ve navigated the struggles of raising children in this environment, researched parenting deeply, and experienced the joy of raising confident, thriving leaders in our community.
